Rooted in Wood,
Shaped for the Present

Moss Studio is the collaborative practice of interior architect and woodturner Mario Vanwynsberghe and herbalist Veerle Knockaert, who approach wood as both material and memory. Working with reclaimed and locally sourced timber, they treat each log as a living remnant of landscape, carrying traces of weather, time, and soil.

Rather than imposing form, they carve and turn with sensitivity, allowing the material to guide the outcome—revealing hidden grain structures, subtle tensions, and quiet irregularities as integral parts of the work.

Their pieces are shaped from fallen or diseased trees—oak, cherry, linden, acacia, and larch among them—offering new life to what might otherwise disappear. Turned thin from solid logs, the vessels dry slowly over weeks, transforming in subtle ways as they settle. Each object emerges singular, marked by the slow rhythm of its making and the natural shifts of the wood itself.

Studio Moss finishes their work with elemental techniques—burning, smoking, blackening, bleaching—and layers of natural waxes, oils, and pigments prepared in-house. These methods leave the pieces tactile and raw, yet defined, carrying the quiet weight of time. Their work holds a delicate balance between sculpture and vessel, presence and void—offering forms that feel both deeply rooted and fleetingly light.

Our guests and visitors can now discover the woodwork of Moss Studio at Cá na serra as part of the exhibition Poetics of Material and Space, curated by Sanae Collective. ‍

Poetics of Material and space runs until September 2026 and can be visited by appointment or by staying at Cá na Serra. The exhibition will exceptionally open to the public on 23rd May 2026, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the dialogue between maker, material and space.
